RED recently announced the EPIC-W, a DSMC2-based brain with the new HELIUM 8K S35 sensor. At 29.9mm x 15.77mm, the HELIUM 8K is slightly smaller than the DRAGON 6K sensor found in the EPIC or WEAPON, so lens choices should be very straightforward. Previously, the HELIUM 8K was only found in a limited quantity, special-edition body with a unique white finish (affectionately dubbed “Storm Trooper” models). Only a handful were available for sale on reduser.net, but they were never meant for general release. With the release of the EPIC-W, the HELIUM sensor is the fourth and latest evolution of RED sensor technology. What’s important to remember is that although HELIUM 8K offers the same 8192 x 4320 resolution as the previously announced WEAPON DRAGON 8K Vista Vision upgrade, the HELIUM is an all new design. I had 12 Hours with the all new RED EPIC-W HELIUM 8K to do whatever I wanted with and to have some fun. Its really hard to describe 8K as anything short of amazing. Remember when we first saw 4K for the first time. Well 8K is the next step. Its really amazing what RED has achieved in some small light weight package. The overall modularity of RED's new DSMC2 makes these cameras light years beyond anything else on the market. In our latest video on Georges Cameras TV, Nathan looks at a pair of cinematic heavyweights with the RED Epic with the Helium sensor and the Canon EOS C300 Mark III. The Canon EOS C300 Mark III is a Super35 cinema camera that's been widely applauded for years now. The Mark I version was launched almost a decade ago. The new EPIC-W GEMINI 5K S35 from RED utilizes a new sensor that has dual sensitivity modes for maximum flexibility. With the dual modes, users can select Gemini’s Standard Mode for normal shooting environments or take advantage of the Low Light mode for those difficult darker scenes. In the Low Light mode, the camera’s native ISO switches to 3200 as compared to the Standard Mode’s 800 ISO.
